Master of Textiles Degree Requirements

1. Of the 30 hours required for the M.S. degree, the following coursework must be included. 

a. A minimum of 15 to 30 credit hours of TT/TTM course work at the 500 or 700 levels. 

2. Of the 30 hours required for the M.T. degree, the following coursework may be included. 

a. A maximum of nine (9) credit hours of supporting coursework from outside the department (non TT/TTM courses). This may be increased to a maximum of 12 hours for students taking 6-credit hour classes in the College of Design. 

b. A maximum of 3 credit hours of advanced undergraduate 400 level coursework from outside of the college may be substituted for course work at the 500 or 700 levels.

c. Six (6) credit hours of the following independent study (IS) courses. Please note, when taking TT/TTM 630,632 or when taking TT/TTM 591 as an independent study, you must submit this IS form [[[this form doesn’t lead anywhere]]] before you can register.

d. If a minor is selected, a minimum of nine (9) hours must be taken in the minor area and nine (9) hours are counted toward the degree requirement.

e. A maximum of 12 credit hours of relevant graduate level courses taken as non-degree studies (NDS) at NC State may be transferred into the program with the approval of the student’s thesis committee.

f. A maximum of 9 credit hours of relevant graduate level courses, taken at an accredited university may be transferred into the program with the approval of the student’s thesis committee.

g.  Two (2) credit hours of TT/TTM 601 (graduate seminar). Please note, no more than 2 hours of TT/TTM 601 can count toward the degree.

Students in the M.S. or M.T. degree may choose to specialize in a given area. Each specialization requires a minimum of 15 credit hours of TT/TTM course work at the 500 or 700 levels. The ABM degrees in the Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management (TATM) are designed to provide exceptional undergraduate students in the Fashion and Textile Management (FTM) and Fashion and Textile Design (FTD) programs with a curriculum that will provide the opportunity to complete a B.S. degree (in FTM or FTD) and a TATM master’s degree in 5 years. Students in this ABM program can choose to pursue a non-thesis track in which they can potentially complete a Master of Textiles (M.T.) degree within 12 months after obtaining a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in FTM or FTD. Alternatively, students can choose the thesis track in which they can potentially complete a Master of Science in Textiles (M.S.) degree within the 18 months following obtaining a B.S. degree in FTM or FTD.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

• Students seeking admission to the ABM program in TATM should begin the application process once they have completed seventy five (75) hours toward their undergraduate degree, including credits earned from advanced placement.
• Transfer students must meet the 75-hour requirement. They are also required to have completed a minimum of two semesters as a full-time student at NC State (a minimum of 24 hours).
• All students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 in their undergraduate degree program coursework and an overall cumulative GPA of 3.5 at the time of application to be considered for participation in the ABM Program.

Program Admission

• A prospective student who meets the eligibility requirements should schedule a meeting with the director of undergraduate programs (DUP). The DUP will review the student’s academic credentials and progress toward the undergraduate degree and then make the appropriate recommendation to the student and the director of graduate programs (DGP) to pursue formal application to the ABM program in TATM. If the student does not meet the minimum GPA requirements or falls below these requirements during the application process, he/she will not be eligible for admission and may continue progress toward the B.S. degree.
• All students recommended by the DUP should schedule a meeting with the DGP by the end of the second semester of the junior year to reap the full benefits of the ABM program. The DGP will help the eligible student to develop a Graduate Plan of Work that outlines how the student will complete the required coursework and requirements for both the B.S. and master’s degrees within the remaining 2-2.5 years of study. The Plan of Work must be approved by both the student’s undergraduate academic adviser, DUP and DGP before the completion of the B.S. degree.
• Students with an approved Plan of Work will be directed to make application to the Graduate School seeking a master’s degree in TATM. Applications consist of the standard Graduate School application form, application fee, official transcripts, a statement of purpose, one letter of recommendation from faculty, and a Plan of Work approved by the undergraduate adviser, DUP and DGP.  With the exceptional academic performance in their undergraduate program (a GPA of 3.5 or above), the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) will not be required for applicants for the ABM program in TATM.
• Application to the Graduate School constitutes formal application to the ABM Program in TATM. The Graduate Programs Committee in the Department of TATM will review all applicants for the program.
• Students may not bypass the Bachelor of Science degree en route to the master’s degree in TATM.

Plan of Work

Contents of the Plan of Work for a master’s degree in textiles (M.T. or M.S.) should contain the following, consistent with the Graduate School’s ABM Plan of Work form.

1. A list of graduate courses taken as an undergraduate student totaling no more than 12 credit hours (500 or 700 level) that will be double-counted toward both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
2. A list of graduate courses taken as an undergraduate student totaling up to a maximum of 6 credit hours that will count toward the graduate degree only.
3. A list of all graduate courses that will be taken after admission to the graduate program.
4. Approval from the undergraduate academic adviser, DUP and DGP in the department of TATM.

The 3+X program is a collaboration between the Wilson College of Textiles and international universities to provide high performing undergraduate students in the partner institutions with an opportunity to take graduate level classes at NC State in their senior year. The courses taken at NC State in the first semester of their senior year can be double counted toward both their bachelor’s of science degree from their home institution and their master’s degree in Wilson College of Textiles at NC State. Participants for this program are nominated by their base university. Those selected officially enroll in the graduate programs in the Wilson College of Textiles in the spring semester of their senior year, pending acceptable academic performance during the prior semester and that all Graduate School requirements are met. Read more.
