Joines Named Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science Department Head

Jeff Joines

Dr. Jeff A. Joines has been appointed as department head for Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science (TECS) effective Jan. 3. He will be the tenth individual to lead the department and will serve as interim department head pending Board of Governors’ confirmation of his new permanent position.

Joines replaces Dr. Peter Hauser, who was named interim department head Jan. 1, 2015.

“Jeff is an outstanding educator who thoroughly understands the strengths and needs of TECS, its faculty and students,” said Dean David Hinks of Joines, who has served as the TECS associate department head since 2008.

Joines brings a wealth of knowledge in teaching and curriculum development having chaired/co-chaired the TECS and the COT Course and Curriculum committees. One of the classes he created, TE/ISE 110 Computer Based Modeling with Excel and VBA, was cited by 84 percent of recent alumni survey respondents as making a difference in their careers.

A passionate advocate for the College, its students and programs, Joines helped create and has co-directed the Polymer Engineering and Chemistry camp since 2006. Polymer Camp is a valuable recruiting tool that brings high-school students interested in physical sciences and engineering to the College. In addition, he has chaired/co-chaired 10 Ph.D. students and 24 master’s students.

During his career, Joines has received about $3.5 million in external and internal funding, a majority of this directly sponsored by industry. He has cultivated a long-term partnership with Hanesbrands, Inc. which has resulted in $2 million dollars in gifts benefiting students and faculty in Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management; Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science; the College of Design; the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences; the College of Engineering; and the Poole College of Management.

Joines has received several teaching awards during his time at NC State including the Outstanding Teacher at NC State, Wilson College of Textiles (2006); the NC State Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award, given by the NC State Alumni Association (2006); and the NC State Alumni Association Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award (2012). But the most prestigious recognition came in 2016 when he became the first person from the Wilson College of Textiles to receive the Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of North Carolina system, an annual honor given to one faculty member at each of the system’s 17 institutions.
