  • Position: Human Resources Specialist
  • Department: Office of Human Resources
  • Hometown: Fayetteville, North Carolina

What was your path to this position?

After graduating from UNC, I decided to pursue a graduate degree in public administration at NC State and of course, I needed a job to help fund this endeavor! Thus I began my NC State career at the Graduate School working with graduate assistantships, fellowships and postdoctoral scholars in a human resources (HR) role.

After five years with the Graduate School, I transitioned into a college HR role with the Office of Research and Innovation for a few years, and then ended up here in the Wilson College of Textile’s Office of Human Resources! I took a brief hiatus from HR to pursue a side passion of elementary education for a few years, but fate led me back to my first love in HR here in the Wilson College. It has definitely been a fun journey, and I am so excited to rejoin the Wilson College family!

Why were you interested in this position/in working at the Wilson College?

Thinking back to my first career in the Wilson College, I remembered how much I loved the small-community feel even though the college has a global influence and impact. The employees here place such value in creating a welcoming environment and supportive culture, and I was thrilled when a position became available so that I could be a part of that again.

What are your duties on a day-to-day basis?

Being in a college HR position is such an interesting role as the tasks that I complete vary dramatically from day-to-day! Some days I work on SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and creating internal and external dashboards that provide employees with valuable information, whereas other days I may assist with onboarding, recruitment, processing student hires or reaching out to prospective visiting scholars.

What is your favorite part of your job and/or working at the Wilson College of Textiles?

I love being in a generalist role where you are able to assist all classifications of employees with anything related to HR or employee culture. It is an exciting adventure to witness an employee’s growth in their career ladder, from their first day on the job to the day they receive a promotion, are awarded their first grant or accomplish a career milestone. Even more, it’s such a unique experience to be a part of a recruitment wherein we hire former students into a staff or faculty position. It’s truly a, “You ARE Wilson College!” moment when this happens!

What do you like to do outside of work?

My daughters would call me a plant enthusiast: I am the proud “plant mom” of 37 houseplants at home, not including the houseplants that my kids have collected in their rooms or the plants I have here in my office. My love for plants also extends to my outdoor garden as well.

I am a proud Raleighite as I have lived here for 16+ years and love to explore unique stores, restaurants or coffee shops, so if you have any recommendations, send them my way!
