What was your path to this position?
I came to NC State in 2022 as a graduate student in the M.S. textile chemistry program. My background is in chemistry, but being here helped me connect that knowledge to fibers, fabrics and color in a way that felt really exciting.
I started as a teaching assistant (TA) for the PCC 302 lab, and over time I got more involved with teaching other labs, participating in outreach activities over the summer, taking on lab management duties and supporting students. One thing led to another, and here I am! It feels like all the little steps: studying, working as a TA and wanting students to have a better experience in the labs built into this role.
Why were you interested in this position?
The Wilson College is such a special place! It’s full of people who are creative, collaborative and genuinely passionate about what they do. I love that textiles touch so many parts of everyday life, and here you can see that play out in real time, from labs to design studios.
I was interested in this position because it combines everything I enjoy: teaching, mentoring, science and community.
What are your duties on a day-to-day basis?
Every day looks a little different, which is what keeps this role exciting. Some days I’m teaching or preparing lectures, other days I’m making sure labs are running smoothly and safely or helping students with their projects.
There’s also a lot of behind-the-scenes organization, coordinating equipment, scheduling and troubleshooting when things don’t quite go as planned. No matter what’s on my plate, there’s always a lot of problem-solving and plenty of interaction with students.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part is definitely working with students. It’s so rewarding to see them make connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they do in the lab. I also love the creativity here, whether it’s dyeing, design or research, people are always trying new things. The energy at Wilson makes it such a fun place to come to every day.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I love creative hobbies, reading, crocheting, watercolor and baking. I’m also big on exploring new coffee shops, bookstores and little hidden gems around town. Spending time with my family and friends is really important to me too. And whenever I can, I love being outside and taking pictures of the sky.
