What was your path to this position?
My path to higher education began at East Carolina University, where I got both my Bachelor of Science in speech and hearing science, and my Master of Science in counselor education. During my undergraduate experience, I immersed myself in all forms of higher education, including Greek Life, forming my own student organization and working as a student assistant in the Office of Academic Advising. This ignited my love for advising and student support. From there, I went on to obtain my M.S., as well as an additional certification in student affairs in higher education.
I started at NC State during my graduate degree program in fall 2023, where I completed internships in Academic Career and Student Services (ACSS) for Wilson, as well as in the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes as an academic mentor. Following graduation in May 2024, I accepted a full-time temporary role as an academic advisor in the Wilson College of Textiles, and this August 2025, we were able to extend the position to a full-time permanent role!
Why were you interested in this position?
As a first-generation college student who was unsure of my academic path, I was interested in serving students and connecting them with resources to help them flourish during their college experience. Wilson is known for its family-like support model to students, faculty and staff, and this approach aligns with my values of what student support looks like. I adore the ACSS team and how much each member of the Wilson community pours into our students, not just during their collegiate experience, but for life.
What are your duties on a day-to-day basis?
My duties are advising first and second-year students in their course selection, mitigating any academic or personal challenges the students may be facing, and helping them plan for both graduation and high-impact experiences.
In addition, I teach sections of T 101, a first-year introductory course, which helps students equip themselves to be successful in their courses and beyond.I also assist in updating the Textiles Student Bulletin, which keeps students informed of opportunities and events.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is having the opportunity to connect with the students. One of the most important parts of my advising model is a holistic approach, where I try to provide students with resources to get involved and connected outside of the classroom. Whether our students are involved in research, club sports, lab work or student organizations, I love hearing about their experiences and helping them be their best selves while at NC State!
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I love to serve my community as a high school cheerleading coach at Roxboro Community School. I also serve as a board member for the Roxboro Jaycees and work planning charity, scholarship and fundraising events, such as the Roxboro Christmas Parade. Aside from volunteering, I also love to read, travel and try out new forms of exercise with friends.
