NC State Student Day in the Life: Landyn Hartman

Senior textile engineering student Landyn Hartman has a busy schedule between school, extracurriculars and work. The Centennial Campus community is a big part of Hartman’s NC State experience. Spending time at Hunt Library, Lake Raleigh and the Textiles Complex allows him to get work done while still taking time for himself.
“I spend a lot of time at Lake Raleigh. I like to go to the dock down there with my friends and after a long day we’ll just chill out there and hang out for a little bit,” Hartman says.
Here’s how he navigates a typical day at the Wilson College of Textiles.
What led you to be passionate or interested in your area of study?
I hopped around some different engineering majors, but I ultimately landed on textiles. It’s got a little bit of everything, so I got the best parts of every major I was interested in. I also really enjoy the sustainability aspect of textile engineering.
What is your favorite place to study or hang out on campus?
To study, I really like the lake view rooms in Hunt that are next to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows on the fourth floor. I also like going to the book stacks every now and then over at Hill Library, just because I like the view of downtown Raleigh.
I spend a lot of time on the Textiles campus and in the Senior Design Lab. I also spend a lot of time at the lake. I like to go to the dock down there.
How do you get to class?
To get to the Textiles Complex, I walk. I live over at Wolf Ridge, so it’s either I walk to Textiles, or when I have something on Central Campus, I’ll take the Wolfline bus.
How big are your classes?
They’re not big at all, and we all know each other. My average class size can be anywhere from 10 to 20 people, but it usually hovers around 16 or so. It’s honestly really nice that there are only 16 to 20 of us in our major, especially since all of us are friends.
What on-campus wellness resources do you use?
I definitely use Carmichael Gym a lot. I really like the indoor track during the winter. I like to run, so it’s nice to not have to go outside in the cold weather. I also use Hunt Library a lot just because I live right across The Oval from it. It’s convenient to go over there and read or take a walk.
What extracurriculars do you participate in?
I’m a member of Theta Tau, which is the engineering fraternity on campus, and I also spent about three years in NC State’s rowing club, and that was a lot of fun. Both of those have helped to introduce me to good communities and some really cool people.
What’s the coolest opportunity you’ve had on campus?
The coolest opportunity I’ve had has probably been my time in the labs at NC State. I’ve worked in the Knitting Lab for a few years now. I’ve gotten a lot of experience with different knitting machines that some of my peers might not have and I’ve gotten to meet a bunch of different industry partners. It’s a lot of hands-on work, and it’s even connected me with some companies that I’ve gotten internships with.
