Development of the PyroHands\u2122 Fire Testing System required advances in laboratory instrumentation technology including development of anthropometric manikin hand forms capable of surviving repeated exposures to intense fire environments, thermal sensors for the hands and fingers and modification to a skin burn translations algorithm that accounts for the difference in the thickness of skin in the hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image img-responsive wp-image-33\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/tex-cloud-cdn.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/textiles-ncsu\/sites\/6\/20231108102218\/pyro-hands-01.jpg\" alt=\"A PyroHands Fire Testing System mounted on a tripod in a test facility\" class=\"wp-image-33\"\/><figcaption>PyroHands\u2122 Fire Testing System<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The PyroHands\u2122 Fire Testing System consists of two stand alone hand forms mounted in the PyroMan fire test chamber. Four propane gas burners are configured to produce a thermal exposure intensity averaging 84 kW\/m<sup>2<\/sup> (2.0 cal\/cm<sup>2<\/sup>sec) across the surface of the hand forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image img-responsive wp-image-35\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"328\" src=\"https:\/\/tex-cloud-cdn.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/textiles-ncsu\/sites\/6\/20231108102218\/pyro-hands-02.jpg\" alt=\"The PyroHands Fire Testing System engulfed in flames\" class=\"wp-image-35\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tex-cloud-cdn.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/textiles-ncsu\/sites\/6\/20231108102218\/pyro-hands-02.jpg 240w, https:\/\/tex-cloud-cdn.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/textiles-ncsu\/sites\/6\/20231108102218\/pyro-hands-02-220x300.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><figcaption>PyroHands\u2122 Fire Testing System<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>PyroHands\u2122 are fitted with twenty thermal sensors located in the ventral surface (palm) and dorsal surface (back) of the hand and in the wrist. An additional sensor is located in the middle finger of the right hand form. The heat flux readings from the sensor in the hand and wrists are translated to predict skin burn injury.
