The development of the RadHand\u2122 Testing System required advances in instrument technology including development of a water-cooled anthropometric manikin hand form. The instrumented hand is capable of surviving long duration radiant exposures. RadHand\u2122 is also automated with flexible fingers that allow a glove to be tested as an open hand, in a flexed position, cycled between the open and flexed configurations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"180\" height=\"211\" src=\"https:\/\/tex-cloud-cdn.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/textiles-ncsu\/sites\/6\/20231108102217\/radhand-with-glove.jpg\" alt=\"A manikin hand form with glove\" class=\"wp-image-45\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The RadHand\u2122 Testing System consists of a right hand form, mounted in front of four radiant panels. Each panel is independently controlled and configured to produce an average radiant exposure of 8.4 kW\/m<sup>2<\/sup> (0.2 cal\/cm<sup>2<\/sup>sec) across the surface of the hand form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RadHand\u2122 is fitted with ten heat flux sensors located on the back of the hand (dorsal) and wrist. Heat flux readings from the sensors are translated to predict skin burn injury. This is done using the <a href=\"https:\/\/textiles.ncsu.edu\/tpacc\/heat-and-flame-protection\/pyroman\/\">PyroMan<\/a>\u2122 burn translation model, modified to account for differences in skin thickness found on the back of the hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RadHand\u2122 test results are graphically displayed to show percent second and third degree burn injury prediction as well as the total.
