The sample submission procedure will be as follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose a test form at the top of this page and submit for approval.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should you have questions regarding any testing you can reach the lab manager via email (Rachel Wu\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:jwu20@ncsu.edu\">jwu20@ncsu.edu<\/a>) or Zoom consultation. The same applies if you are not sure what test is most suitable for the data you are looking for.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the submission form is received and accepted by the lab manager and if there are no questions from either party you can place the samples in a plastic ziplock bag with your NAME clearly written on the bag and all samples in the bag clearly labeled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sample submission station is outside of lab Room 2126. You will see 2 baskets \u2013 one labeled for \u201cdrop off\u201d, the other one for \u201cpick up\u201d should you want the remaining sample material back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the analyses are complete, the sample will be placed back into the pick up basket if you selected that you want it back. If not it will be discarded. You will also be emailed spectra &amp; data and, should you have questions, can address those by email or zoom as mentioned above.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please&nbsp;email&nbsp;Rachel Wu&nbsp;with any questions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Analytical Services Lab is part of the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science in the Wilson College of Textiles at NC&#160;State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lab functions not only as a resource for graduate students to obtain data for their M.S. thesis or Ph.D. dissertation work, but is also utilized for teaching and service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Outside lab services are mostly in the fields of textile and polymer manufacturing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testing, client interaction and communication is conducted by the \u2018on staff\u2019 laboratory manager.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Client communication is maintained throughout the testing process to minimize unnecessary expenses and maximize the utility of the information generated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collaboration with a diverse clientele of internal (including other NC&#160;State colleges) as well as external industry sponsors. This typically applies if Tg\u2019s are analyzed as they show a stronger transition when run at faster heating rates. The reason for this is that DSC measures the flow of energy and during a fast scan the energy flow increases over a shorter period of time. Typically decompositions in N<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;form higher thermally stable compounds and decompose at higher temperatures than in air, which is an oxidizing gas.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Thermograms are evaluated by applying a first derivative to the raw data, which displays the rate of mass change and allows to select onset, starting and ending temperatures for weight percentage calculations.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Mass changes occur based on various factors. In the UV-Vis range electronic transitions take place. When a photon hits a molecule and is absorbed, the molecule undergoes a transition to a higher energy state. Molecules that exhibit double bonds exhibit the best UV absorbance.<br>In an organic dye molecule, the part of the molecule responsible for its color is called the chromophore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically colored solutions absorb in the Vis range (360-700nm), non-colored solutions in the UV region (190-350nm). It is a common misperception that the lambda max for a compound is the color it appears. If there is a match in frequency of the radiation and the natural vibration of the molecular bond between 2 or more atoms, absorption occurs, which in turn increases the amplitude of the vibration displayed as a peak in the spectrum.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Ge and Diamond are two common crystal materials used for ATR measurements. Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) allows for versatile sampling techniques with no sample preparation required<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Because they have different refractive indices (RI), each crystal material will result in differences in the IR depth of penetration (DOP) into the sample. (Polymers are large molecules composed of many repeating monomer units joined together.)&nbsp; It is nearly impossible to make polymers with all the same chain lengths.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>SEC is typically performed on molecules larger than 2000 Daltons in molecular weight. It is a technique that separates the different sizes of polymer chains in a sample and measure their relative abundance.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The separation relies solely on the size of the polymer molecules in solution and is done under isocratic conditions, meaning the mobile phase concentration remains the same throughout the analysis.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Once the polymer is dissolved in the solvent, the initially long chains of monomers that were linked together will \u2018coil up\u2019 on themselves to form a coil formation which resembles a ball of string.
