Dr. Behnam Pourdeyhimi joined NC\u00a0State immediately after completing his Ph.D. at the University of Leeds in 1982.\u00a0 Soon, he left for other opportunities, Cornell (2 years), University of Maryland (11 years), and Georgia Tech (4 years) before returning to NC\u00a0State in 1998-199 Academic year.<\/p>\n
Behnam is the\u00a0William A. Klopman Distinguished Professor of Materials<\/strong>\u00a0in the Wilson College of Textiles at NC\u00a0State University and is also an adjunct professor in the departments of\u00a0Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Biomedical Engineering<\/strong>.\u00a0 He also serves as Associate Dean in the Wilson College of Textiles and is the\u00a0Executive Director of The Nonwovens Institute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Early in his career, he focused on the development of tools for characterizing various materials including nonwovens, medical devices, composite materials, etc.\u00a0 For this body of work, he received the\u00a0ASTM D-13<\/strong>\u00a0Dewitt Smith Medal<\/strong>.\u00a0 In particular, his work on image analysis won him the\u00a0Fiber Society Distinguished Scientist award in 1994<\/strong>.\u00a0 He also was selected as the\u00a0Fiber Society Lecturer<\/strong>\u00a0where he traveled broadly to present his work to industry and academia.\u00a0 He later served also as the\u00a0vice president<\/strong>, and the\u00a0president of the Fiber Society<\/strong>.<\/p>\n He is best known for his contributions to nonwovens and establishment and the growth of nonwovens at NC\u00a0State.\u00a0 His work in the area of filtration won him the\u00a0O\u2019 Max Gardner<\/strong>\u00a0award in 2015 (The Highest award by the University of North Carolina System), and in 2018, he received\u00a0The Holladay Medal for Excellence\u00a0<\/strong>(The highest faculty award bestowed by NC\u00a0State University).\u00a0 In 2020, Behnam was inducted into the\u00a0National Academy of Inventors<\/strong>\u00a0as a\u00a0Fellow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n He joined NC\u00a0State in part to take on a leadership role in the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center (NCRC).\u00a0 Under his vision, the center morphed into the\u00a0Nonwovens Institute<\/strong>\u00a0(NWI). NWI is the largest\u00a0university-based research institute<\/strong>\u00a0in the nation across all disciplines.\u00a0 Today, NWI is the world\u2019s first accredited academic program for the interdisciplinary field of engineered fabrics. Operating on an \u201cOpen Innovation\u201d platform, the Nonwovens Institute engages experts from industry and higher education in building next-generation nonwoven applications while also providing training and guidance to the field\u2019s future leaders.<\/p>\n He has published several books and monographs, over 375 refereed journal articles, and over 250 conference presentations. He is the recipient of The Fiber Society Young Distinguished Achievement Award (1994) and Fellowship of the Textile Institute (1994). He served as the President of the Fiber Society in 1995. His students have won several awards, including the Fiber Society Best Paper award and the INTC Best Paper Ward.<\/p>\n Dr. Pourdeyhimi\u2019s research interests are in the area of nonwovens, biomaterials, modeling, image analysis, and filtration.
