{"id":11976,"date":"2018-05-04T09:51:10","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T13:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.tx.ncsu.edu\/news\/?p=11976"},"modified":"2018-05-04T09:51:10","modified_gmt":"2018-05-04T13:51:10","slug":"textiles-receives-nc-state-sustainability-fund-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/textiles.ncsu.edu\/news\/2018\/05\/textiles-receives-nc-state-sustainability-fund-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Textiles Receives NC&#160;State Sustainability Fund Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Susan Fandel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten sustainability projects will be implemented on campus over the next year thanks to $120,824 in grants recently awarded by the student-led advisory board of NC&#160;State\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sustainability.ncsu.edu\/get-involved\/student-sustainability-fund\">Sustainability Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generated by a $2.50 per semester student fee that students voted to create in 2012, grant funding is available to NC&#160;State students, faculty and staff who submit proposals for sustainability projects that improve campus or promote awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause of these innovative projects and the Fund, campus is more sustainable and students are more aware of sustainability and the lasting impacts they can initiate during their four years,\u201d said student Liz Wallner, the chair of this year\u2019s Sustainability Fund board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selected from a pool of 24 applications totaling a request of $516,000 in funding, the 10 winning projects will be completed by July 1, 2019, and will specifically fund:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Design assessment for a solar-powered heating system at Bragaw Residence Hall.<\/li><li>Installation at the Student Health Center of a window film designed to reduce bird collisions with the building while also providing an undergraduate research opportunity to assess the film\u2019s effectiveness.<\/li><li>Installation of water bottle refilling stations at the Wilson College of Textiles.<\/li><li>Expansion of the Food Recovery Network, a student organization that addresses hunger by working with NC&#160;State Dining to recover leftover food from campus dining locations and distribute to local nonprofit organizations.<\/li><li>A pilot project that installs timers on Bragaw Residence Hall showers in order to raise student awareness of water use and reduce the building\u2019s water consumption.<\/li><li>Improvement of trails and signage at Lake Raleigh to encourage running, biking and other outdoor activities on Centennial Campus.<\/li><li>Development of an Energy and Justice Service Trip to educate students about social environmental implications while participating in service projects such as clean up of waterways and after hurricanes.<\/li><li>Restoration of the longleaf pine woodland on NC&#160;State\u2019s Lake Wheeler Road Biological Field Laboratory involving prescribed burns with assistance from Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources students.<\/li><li>Two concerts by NC&#160;State and Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra to create interdisciplinary conversation about environmental issues and sustainability initiatives.<\/li><li>Interactive class assignment that teaches students in Environmental Sciences and other related courses about urban trees. By helping identify and measure campus trees, students will provide vital data to ensuring sustainable tree landscaping on campus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>New this fall, the Fund will introduce a fall semester opportunity to apply for grants.
