Wilson in a Word

Originally from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Newman has always been interested in textiles and materials. With a personal interest in sustainability and knit programming, Newman is studying how the performance of natural and synthetic yarns compare in the development of common knit footwear structures.

Newman’s path to the Wilson College began the summer after her junior year in high school when she participated in the Summer Textile Exploration Program. STEP, as it’s known, introduced her to the complex and exciting world of textiles, where she developed a drive to learn more about the industry and its applications.

“The Wilson College has been incredibly supportive in many respects,” said Newman. “I have the opportunity to work as a funded graduate student performing research that is important to the industry, while simultaneously learning every day. The classes, presentations and hands-on applications in the college have allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of the textile field, preparing me for an exhilarating future where I know I will thrive daily.”

After earning her doctorate, she hopes to contribute to technical textile development and eventually participate in academic research and teaching.

“I was not aware of how exhilarating it can feel to be in a community where other students share common interests and goals,” she said. “The support of the Wilson community – and the NC State campus as a whole – has allowed for growth in many unexpected ways.”
