Recipients of the award carry the title of University Faculty Scholar and receive a permanent increase to their base salary.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>One of 24 early- and mid-career faculty members to receive the honor in the 2019-2020 year, DenHartog is an expert in the optimization of protection, performance and comfort of clothing for the human body for military, first responder, health and sports applications. His most recent research involves the interaction of fabrics and human skin and the effect high performance fabrics have on skin health. With his graduate student, DenHartog recently developed a new, more accurate way to measure a fabric\u2019s ability to wick moisture away from the body using microfluidics.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>DenHartog joined Wilson College in 2013 as an associate professor in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/textiles.ncsu.edu\/tecs\/\"><span>Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science<\/span><\/a><span> (TECS) and co-director of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/textiles.ncsu.edu\/tpacc\/\"><span>Textile Protection and Comfort Center<\/span><\/a><span>. Prior to coming to NC&#160;State, he was a senior scientist at CBRN, Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research. In addition to his tenured faculty and co-director positions at NC&#160;State, he serves as the associate department head and the director of graduate programs for the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>\u201cI consider Dr. DenHartog a rare individual and valued member of the TECS department,\u201d Dr. Jeffrey Joines, head of the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science, says. \u201cOur goal is to have Dr. DenHartog have a long and lasting career at NC&#160;State University. He is an amazing individual who always has a smile on his face as he loves to come to work to interact with faculty, staff and students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>During his tenure with the Wilson College, DenHartog has received many awards and honors, including the American Association for Textile Chemists and Colorists Weaver Award for the 2016 Paper of the Year, induction into NC&#160;State\u2019s Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension, and the 2014-2015 NC&#160;State Outstanding Extension Service Award. He also serves on the National Academy of Science\u2019s Institute of Medicine Committee on Personal Protective Equipment for Workplace Safety and Health.
