{"id":25006,"date":"2018-02-26T16:12:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-26T21:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/textiles.ncsu.edu\/news\/?p=20127"},"modified":"2018-02-26T16:12:00","modified_gmt":"2018-02-26T21:12:00","slug":"caldwell-fellow-shaped-pcc-students-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/textiles.ncsu.edu\/news\/2018\/02\/caldwell-fellow-shaped-pcc-students-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Being a Caldwell Fellow has Shaped this PCC Student&#8217;s Life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tre\u2019 Dennis smiles when he recalls his trip to Mexico last summer with the <a href=\"https:\/\/caldwellfellows.ncsu.edu\/s\/1209\/caldwell\/home.aspx?gid=1001&amp;pgid=5024\">Caldwell Fellows<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NC&#160;State University sophomore was part of a group working on a community mural outside a local school in the small town of San Nicol\u00e1s del Carmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had a kid on my shoulders \u2013 he was holding a whole bucket of paint over my head and painting, and I was just hoping he didn\u2019t spill it on me,\u201d Dennis said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t see what he was painting. I just remember holding him up. It\u2019s those moments when you really connect with people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there was a language barrier, Dennis, who is working toward his B.S. in polymer and color chemistry with a minor in biology, said it was a true bonding moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was able to get close to some of the kids in that community,\u201d he said. \u201cI learned a lot more from the children in that community than they could have ever learned from me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That time spent in service to the people of San Nicol\u00e1s del Carmen is an experience he\u2019ll never forget, and one that might not have been possible, were it not for his Caldwell Fellowship. In addition to scholarship money toward tuition and access to learning opportunities on campus, Caldwell Fellows receive an annual stipend \u201cmeant to encourage them to take a risk they may not otherwise take and invest in an experience that will benefit them as individuals and servant-leaders,\u201d according to the website for the Caldwell Fellows Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dennis, who grew up in Winston-Salem, said he picked NC&#160;State for its prestige, focus on science and value for the money. He credits the Caldwell Fellowship with helping shape him as an individual.
