Several Wilson College of Textiles students decided to continue their education overseas this semester. Through NC State’s Study Abroad Office, students attended the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute or Academia Italiana in Italy.

In addition to taking interesting classes, they also immersed themselves in new cultures and explored other countries across Europe. Meet a few of them below!

I wanted to study abroad because I love to travel and learn about other cultures. Traveling with an open mind makes you a better human being. I chose the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute because it offers some classes in fashion design that I can’t find at NC State.

Trend forecasting because I get to learn more about consumers, when to start trends and how customers think, which is important for someone who wants to start a business.

My study abroad experience will definitely benefit my education by making it more well-rounded. Instead of taking mainly design and textile technology courses, I’m learning about the business and societal effects of fashion, which is very important and makes me a better candidate for a job.

Hearing from other students’ opportunities and adventures while studying abroad really made me want to take on this experience! I have never been able to travel outside of the United States, and I thought this would be the perfect time to step outside of my comfort zone and immerse myself in a new culture and world.

I chose this program because I had heard wonderful things about Florence, Italy and Lorenzo de’ Medici. I also heard it was easy to take a full course load here that directly translates to my major. While in Italy, I have been able to travel to other countries and cities on the weekends, which has been an amazing experience and a way to grow in my independence and global knowledge.

So far my favorite class is Trend Forecasting. This class has allowed me to step outside of my business-minded comfort zone and make some really creative things with future fashion trends!

I have learned how independent and savvy I can be. From figuring out the French metro system to navigating travel and health regulations, I have been forced to be extremely responsible in all situations. I also discovered how much I love learning languages and being able to communicate with people from all walks of life. I learned that I value different cultures and want to keep exploring other places in the world.

I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and experience living in another country. I chose the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute mainly because of the location and the classes offered. I thought that Florence would be an amazing place to experience Italian culture and history.

Interior Design is a studio class that is five hours long. The material we learn is very interesting and interactive.

I believe that the education I have received while abroad is exceptional! The Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute teachers develop mentorships with the students and are very interactive with the class.

By Destry Adams

Several Wilson College of Textiles students decided to continue their education overseas this semester.
