Each year, the African American Textile Society<\/a>\u2019s Fashion Expos\u00e9 allows up-and-coming designers from around the Triangle to showcase their work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event is about more than just competition. It\u2019s also about tradition and community. The show is NC State\u2019s longest-running student design competition, and it takes place during the university\u2019s Pan-Afrikan Week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year marked Tia Rogers\u2019 first opportunity to experience the competition in person. She joined AATS in spring of 2020, when the show was canceled. This is her second year serving on the Fashion Expos\u00e9 committee, but in 2021, the show was held virtually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe day of the show was actually kind of when I met everybody and had the role of getting everybody ready for the runway, making sure all the models and designers were good,\u201d the textile design senior says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five designers from NC State and a team of two designers from North Carolina Central University competed in one of two categories for scholarships \u2013 novice and intermediate. A panel of judges evaluated the designers based on the following criteria: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
