Weaving capabilities include rapier, projectile, airjet, waterjet and shuttle looms with cam, dobby and jacquard shedding systems. Along with full width looms, the weaving lab also has two CCI sample looms for small scale prototyping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This lab operates to support student learning, research projects and industry prototyping needs. The opening between the separated warp yarns is called a \u201cshed\u201d, with part of the warp on the top of the shed, and the other part on the bottom of the shed. The shed opening is where the filling or the \u2018weft\u2019 yarn is inserted. The shedding process is what helps to develop the weave design in the fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n      <\/p>\n  <\/details>\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item\" name=\"3sl0gk\"  >\n      <summary class=\"accordion-item__header\">\n        <span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\">\n          <span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span>\n        <\/span>\n        <h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h6\">What is cam shedding?<\/h2>\n      <\/summary>\n      <p>\n        \n\n<p>Cam shedding controls harnesses with a metal circular device, called a cam, that is shaped in different ways to create different designs. As the cam rotates, the high spots on the cam lift the harness, and the low spots lower the harness. One cam controls one harness. Dobby shedding can create intermediate design repeat sizes while also carrying smaller motifs throughout the fabric, and can create more complicated designs than cam shedding.<\/p>\n\n\n      <\/p>\n  <\/details>\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item\" name=\"3sl0gk\"  >\n      <summary class=\"accordion-item__header\">\n        <span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\">\n          <span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span>\n        <\/span>\n        <h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h6\">What is jacquard shedding? <\/h2>\n      <\/summary>\n      <p>\n        \n\n<p>Jacquard shedding is used to create the most complex weaving designs. Instead of using harnesses, the Jacquard instead uses harness cords. These harness cords individually lift up the warp yarns to create the shed. This unlimited control means that multiple weave structures may be simultaneously used. The immense control of the jacquard machine allows for intricate details of very large design repeat dimensions to be woven into a fabric.
