Sweating Manikin Head

Since material-level evaluations of THL cannot replicate the effect of fit and design, the Sweating Manikin Head is an instrument designed for predicting THL of head-donned garments through nine individually heated zones and multiple sweating pores. Predicting heat loss using the headform more accurately reflects the real-world use of the protective hoods. Testing of firefighter hoods in combination with other turnout gear items such as the mask and helmet on the SMH will help to improve requirements for both traditional and particulate-blocking hoods.
