Shahida Afrin – “Resourceful”
Wilson in a Word “Resourceful” is what comes to mind for Shahida Afrin. “With its technology-rich labs and fashion studio, students can ‘think and do’ as much as they want in the Wilson College of Textiles,” Afrin said. Passionate about innovative technology, Afrin is pursuing her doctorate in textile technology management with research focusing on three-dimensional apparel simulation technology. As a child in Bangladesh – a world hub of apparel industries – Afrin was fascinated how color and yarn were combined to make a beautiful dress. Her passion for design fueled her dream to become a textile engineer. Intrigued by the impact of technology in textile design, she earned a Master of Science in textiles at NC State University, and from there, continued on toward her doctorate. “The Wilson College is heavy with industry-class equipment for advanced research,” she noted. “The research areas of faculty and students are beyond imagination, which is unique among the textile programs in the world.” Afrin plans to work and consult in the textile industry after earning her doctorate. “By keeping me up to date with emerging technological knowledge and industry-class equipment, the Wilson College is preparing me for future jobs.”
