We are delighted to introduce you to the 2018 class of Centennial Scholarship recipients, incoming freshmen chosen on the basis of high academic achievement, proven and potential leadership qualities, extracurricular activities and unique life experiences. This year’s group of scholars is comprised of artists, athletes, actors, musicians, community leaders and volunteers, who have all worked hard to get here and want to make the world a better place.

College of Textiles alumnus Michael Scipione is using the skills he learned as a member of the Wolfpack in his career with an environmentally-friendly packaging company. The 2015 NC State graduate, with bachelor’s degrees in both Textile Engineering and biomedical engineering, is the director of research and development at TemperPack.

As the new assistant director of annual giving and prospect development for the North Carolina Textile Foundation (NCTF), she engages with young alumni every day to boost support for the College of Textiles at NC State.

All Sewn Up

Dr. Hui Cong will soon return to her hometown in China -- but she is leaving behind a body of work that will help make better, longer lasting surgical materials. She has focused her research here at the College of Textiles on absorbable barbed sutures -- monofilaments that each look like the thorned stem of a rose -- which eliminate the need for tying knots, thus reducing surgical time and promoting wound healing.

Dr. Cynthia L. Istook Named Cornelson Family Distinguished Professor

Dr. Cynthia Istook, professor in the department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management (TATM), has been named the Cornelson Family Distinguished Professor of Textile and Apparel Design, effective April 1. The professorship was established in 1987 to help advance the field of textile and apparel design. Istook is a leader in this field, molding tomorrow’s pioneers and actively working to improve apparel design through emerging technology.
