Building a Better Bra

It’s almost a rule that the more attractive a bra is, the less comfortable it feels -- and vice versa. A bra that doesn’t cause shoulder or back pain, supports the breasts and allows freedom of movement has all the aesthetic appeal of an ACE bandage, while a bra built for looks is as pleasant to wear as a stiletto heel. NC State College of Textiles student Sophie Nunno-Gorbachev ‘19 believes there is a better way, and, as the recent recipient of a grant from the Office of Undergraduate Research, she is well on her way to designing a bra that marries form and function.

Fourth Generation Alumna Carves her own Path

Sara Thomas, B.S., Fashion and Textile Management ’15, has cotton woven into her genes. She is the fourth generation of the Thomas family to graduate from the College of Textiles. Her great-grandfather, Mason P. Thomas, arrived on NC State’s campus in 1919 and every generation of her family since has followed in his footsteps. However, just as the textile industry has shifted focus across the decades, each member of the Thomas family has carved out his or her unique path.

Kayla Brewer ‘14 Opens Voda Boutique Downtown

College of Textiles alumna Kayla Brewer always knew her future was fashion. From the moment she decided she wanted to own a clothing store, each class she took and every position she worked was part of a larger strategy. Now, just three years after graduation, she has opened Voda, a women’s clothing and accessories boutique in downtown Raleigh.
