Learning to Lead

Over the past year, almost two dozen women at the Wilson College of Textiles have benefited from professional development grants through the Ellen Rohde Leadership Initiative. Female students, faculty and staff have been able to network and learn through travel to conferences, workshops and research opportunities worldwide as a result of these grants, honing their leadership skills and widening their career paths.

The Wilson College of Textiles is proud to introduce one of its newest assistant professors: Dr. Mengmeng Zhu. Last November, the assistant professor entered the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science and since then has been making strides towards research and sharing her findings among students, faculty and the community. Zhu has been a recipient of several select scholarships and awards during her pursuit of further knowledge and continues to make an impact in academia today.

Two Ph.D. Students Receive VF Assistantships

When NC State and VF Corporation announced a collaborative, strategic partnership in January 2018, one of the goals was to support student development at NC State. To that end, two College of Textiles Ph.D. students have been named recipients of the VF Graduate Assistantship in Apparel and Footwear. This award supports outstanding graduate students conducting research on emerging and advanced topics in apparel and footwear of interest to VF, home to such brands as Reef, Wrangler and The North Face.

College of Textiles alumnus Michael Scipione is using the skills he learned as a member of the Wolfpack in his career with an environmentally-friendly packaging company. The 2015 NC State graduate, with bachelor’s degrees in both Textile Engineering and biomedical engineering, is the director of research and development at TemperPack.
