4 Year Career Development Plan for Wilson College of Textiles Students

First Year

  • Get acclimated to the Wilson College of Textiles and NC State University.
  • Develop good study habits!
  • Begin developing your community of friends and support systems.
  • Explore your interests through student clubs and organizations (both Textiles and non-Textiles related)
  • Get to know Wilson College of Textiles faculty and staff (we’re all here to help you be successful)!
    • Visiting faculty during office hours is a great way to connect.
    • Schedule an appointment with an academic advisor or career counselor.
  • Begin thinking what you want your resume to look like 4 years from now.
    • Set short and long term goals for yourself (but keep in mind that goals are subject to change).
    • Do you want to study abroad? Do you want to do a co-op? Do you want to learn a foreign language? The sooner you start thinking about these things, the more time you’ll have to prepare.
  • Attend the Wilson College of Textiles Job/Internship Fair to get an idea of the types of employers who recruit our students.
  • Talk to your advisor about enrolling in T104, Fabric of Success and Career Readiness.
  • Schedule a meeting to meet with Jeff Sackaroff, director of career services.
  • Log into ePACK and create your profile.

Sophomore Year

  • Update your ePACK profile and profile to reflect your new GPA, student involvement, coursework and experiences.
  • Continue to network with faculty/staff.
    • These relationships can offer so much, such as mentoring, research opportunities, and personal recommendations to employers and graduate schools down the road.
  • Get involved!
    • Student organizations are a great way to explore your interests, meet other students, and develop your leadership skills. But don’t spread yourself too thin; think depth rather than breadth.
  • View ePACK regularly to get an early jump on potential internships for the upcoming summer.
  • Explore study abroad opportunities.
  • Create your LinkedIn account and join the NC State University LinkedIn group.
  • Attend the Wilson College of Textiles Fall and Spring Job/Internship Fairs.
  • Conduct informational interviews with professionals and alumni to learn more about the world of work.
  • Take advantage of the career workshops and programming offered by the Wilson College of Textiles Office of Career Services.
  • Talk to your advisor about enrolling in T104, Fabric of Success and Career Readiness.

Junior Year

  • Update your ePACK profile and profile to reflect your new GPA, student involvement, coursework and experiences.
  • Look for leadership opportunities within your student organizations.
  • Participate in a study abroad.
  • Update your LinkedIn account and continue to grow your network.
  • Attend an interviewing workshop and participate in a mock interview.
  • Apply for summer internships beginning in the fall semester.
  • If considering graduate school, begin exploring options and areas of interest.
  • Attend the Wilson College of Textiles Job/Internship Fairs.
  • Take advantage of the career workshops and programming offered by the Wilson College of Textiles Office of Career Services.
  • Schedule a meeting to meet with Jeff Sackaroff, director of career services.

Senior Year

  • Update your ePACK profile and profile to reflect your internship experience, GPA, student involvement, coursework and other related experiences.
  • Regularly view ePACK for fulltime jobs and apply for any that interest you.
  • Review the list of additional job search resources available on the Wilson College of Textiles Career Services webpage.
  • Participate in on-campus interviews.
  • Attend the Wilson College of Textiles Job/Internship Fairs.
  • Complete the Wilson College of Textiles First Destination Survey and share your post-graduations plans.
  • Schedule a meeting to meet with Jeff Sackaroff, director of career services.
  • Celebrate your success of becoming a Wilson College of Textiles graduate!
