NC State’s oldest summer study abroad program is in Oxford, United Kingdom, and it is also undoubtedly one of its best. The Oxford Study Abroad program encapsulates everything you could expect from a month at one of the most prestigious universities in the world – courses with amazing Oxford Dons, history around every corner, and a diverse crowd of great minds and unique characters to mingle with daily. The program brings together a diversity of students to live at an Oxford college and to study in a way which exemplifies the Oxford tradition of academic life, through British tutors and lectures from the University of Oxford. Over 760 students have participated in the Oxford program over the last 30 years.

Oxford lies between the Isis (Thames) and Cherwell Rivers; its name coming from an ancient site where oxen forded the river. A city and industrial center, it is best known as the seat of Oxford University, the oldest in England, celebrated for tradition, academic excellence, and beautiful architecture. Students are encouraged to take advantage of all the plays, places of architectural and historical interest, libraries, and museums.

The local area offers pubs where C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and John Wesley once gathered. The Oxford Theater Guild presents plays by Shakespeare in the garden of St. John’s College, beautifully using the natural outdoor backdrop during the summer nights of July; and The Bodleian Library, possibly the finest of its kind in the world, is at Oxford.
