What if swallowing a robot could replace some invasive medical procedures?
Researchers at the Wilson College of Textiles have developed soft magnetic “muscles” that bring origami-inspired robots to life. Guided by external magnetic fields, these robots can unfold, move and potentially deliver medicine directly where it’s needed inside the body.
Using a new 3D printing technique, the team created flexible magnetic muscles without adding bulk or restricting movement. One prototype can be swallowed in capsule form, unfold inside the stomach and deliver medicine to ulcers in a targeted, less invasive way. Another can crawl across a variety of outdoor terrains using that same technology!
From healthcare to space exploration, this research shows how textiles and robotics can come together to solve complex problems in unexpected ways.
