Student Experience
Our college is home to opportunities — and a community — you won’t find anywhere else.
A Complete Education
Many institutions offer a textiles program or two. Only our college offers a comprehensive textiles education, backed by unmatched experiences you make your own.
Here, you can tap into the high-impact learning, extensive industry connections and worldwide engagement that are unique to us — not to mention all the resources of North Carolina’s largest university. From student-run fashion shows to senior design projects for brands like Under Armour or Red Bull, you can lead with like-minded peers.
Develop your passion for sustainability, pursue undergraduate research or study overseas in cities from Manchester to Melbourne. Tailor your experience to the things you care about. Then turn them into a fulfilling career.
Just your friendly reminder that STEM starts early, and the future of medical textiles starts here. 🧪
During the NC-MSEN Pre-College Program, campers got hands-on experience in the Wilson labs exploring how everyday fabrics connect to medical breakthroughs. They worked through exciting experiments, including preparing serial dilutions and testing fabric effectiveness.
Not only did the campers learn how chemistry, engineering and technology work together, they also explored how medical textiles protect and improve human health.

Just popping in to remind you that our students do things like design custom wallpaper for our Wilson spaces. ❤️
Hannah Komulainen ‘28 (FTD-TD) won our Shuttle Inn Commons wallpaper design contest earlier this year! From mood boards and color palettes to digitally painted original motifs, Hannah takes us through her full design process. The result? A fully installed wallpaper that brings the Shuttle Inn to life and proves the process is just as impressive as the finished product.

From hand paintings to final products! 🎨
Our second-year textile design students started with original hand-painted and sketched artworks and used Photoshop and NedGraphics to turn their motifs into digital patterns. Using the Mimaki pigment printer in the college’s Digital Design Lab, the patterns were printed onto silk and students finished the kaftans by sewing them into the drape of their choice!

What if swallowing a robot could replace some invasive medical procedures?
Researchers at the Wilson College of Textiles have developed soft magnetic “muscles” that bring origami-inspired robots to life. Guided by external magnetic fields, these robots can unfold, move and potentially deliver medicine directly where it’s needed inside the body.
Using a new 3D printing technique, the team created flexible magnetic muscles without adding bulk or restricting movement. One prototype can be swallowed in capsule form, unfold inside the stomach and deliver medicine to ulcers in a targeted, less invasive way. Another can crawl across a variety of outdoor terrains using that same technology!
From healthcare to space exploration, this research shows how textiles and robotics can come together to solve complex problems in unexpected ways.
