M.S. Textiles Degree Requirements

The Master of Science in Textiles (M.S.) prepares students for industry positions or further studies in Ph.D. degrees. Students interested in continuing with a Ph.D. in Textile Technology Management (TTM) or Fiber and Polymer Science (FPS) are strongly encouraged to pursue the M.S. degree. 

Degree Requirements

The M.S. degree requires a minimum of 36 hours of coursework and a thesis. The M.S. degree typically takes 2 years to complete and must be completed within 6 years. Students must be continuously enrolled once they begin their graduate program. Students may request a leave of absence from the program for one semester at a time, with two (2) semesters maximum. Graduate students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA to remain in the program and have a minimum 3.0 GPA at the time of graduation.

Students must meet all the rules outlined in the Graduate School Administrative Handbook.

1. Of the 36 hours required for the M.S. degree, the following coursework must be included. 

a. A minimum of 15 to 24 credit hours of TT/TTM course work at the 500 or 700 levels. 

b. Two (2) credit hours of TT/TTM 601 (graduate seminar). Please note, no more than 2 hours of TT/TTM 601 can count toward the degree.

c. Eight to ten (8-10) hours of the following research courses:

2. Of the 36 hours required for the M.S. degree, the following coursework may be included. 

a. A maximum of nine (9) credit hours of supporting coursework from outside the department (non TT/TTM courses). This may be increased to a maximum of 12 hours for students taking 6-credit hour classes in the College of Design. 

b. A maximum of 3 credit hours of advanced undergraduate 400 level coursework from outside of the department may be substituted for course work at the 500 or 700 levels.

c. Six (6) credit hours of the following independent study (IS) courses. Please note, when taking TT/TTM 630,632 or when taking TT/TTM 591 as an independent study, you must submit this IS form before you can register.

d. If a minor is selected, a minimum of nine (9) hours must be taken in the minor area and nine (9) hours are counted toward the degree requirement.

e. A maximum of 12 credit hours of relevant graduate level courses taken as non-degree studies (NDS) at NC State may be transferred into the program with the approval of the student’s thesis committee. Transfer courses cannot be graded S or U, a 400 level course and must have a grade of “B” or better.

f. A maximum of 9 credit hours of relevant graduate level courses, taken at an accredited University may be transferred into the program with the approval of the student’s thesis committee. Transfer courses cannot be graded S or U, a 400 level course and must have a grade of “B” or better.
