TT | Medical Textiles Concentration

The expanding field of medical textiles includes all textile products that contribute to improving human health and wellbeing, protecting us against infection and disease, providing external support for injured limbs, promoting the healing of wounds and replacing injured and diseased tissues and organs. The medical textiles program builds on the student’s knowledge of polymers and fibrous materials, textile processing technologies, as well as the physical, chemical and biological sciences. This enables the student to design, fabricate and evaluate new and innovative medical textile products.

The Details

This concentration is the first and only medical textiles curriculum to be offered anywhere in the world as part of a university bachelor’s degree program. As a result students registered in this concentration have found internships and permanent employment with biomedical device, medical textile, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, such as Johnson & Johnson, 3M, Medtronic and Pfizer, and in government departments, such as the Food and Drug Administration, and in purchasing functions within the healthcare sector.

All students in the medical textiles program complete fundamental coursework in polymers and fibrous materials, their conversion to textile structures, surface modification and assembly and sterilization techniques that are essential in the manufacture of commercial medical products. The curriculum includes basic courses in cell biology, statistics, quality management, biomedical engineering and regulatory affairs which prepare the student through summer internships and study abroad programs, product development and undergraduate research projects, to interact with companies that manufacture medical textile products, and to design and fabricate their own prototype samples during their senior year.
