PCC | Science and Operations Concentration

The B.S. in Polymer and Color Chemistry (PCC) is a flexible, rigorous program in applied chemistry that provides courses in fundamental chemistry, while incorporating the unique areas of applied polymer and color chemistry. The applied courses are heavily oriented to the chemistry and technology of polymers, including polymer synthesis, extrusion and characterization. In addition, the color chemistry component of the degree includes the synthesis and application of dyes and other compounds associated with the coloration of materials, textile wet processing (i.e. preparation and finishing), chemistry of textile auxiliaries as well as the science of color perception and color measurement.

The program is designed to expose students to the technical and scholarly disciplines of polymer chemistry, fiber formation, color physics, dyeing, and chemical modification of fabrics, and gives them an opportunity to learn how basic disciplines are applied in an industrial environment.

Students planning to continue their higher education towards master’s and doctoral degrees should be informed that many graduate schools require differential equations and should therefore plan accordingly.

The Details

  • The Science and Operations concentration (PCA) is designed for students wishing to obtain advanced studies in chemistry and related subjects while having the flexibility to choose a range of elective courses dependent on their area of interest. This degree concentration offers more flexibility in terms of certain course transfers.
  • While engineering level calculus and physics are encouraged non-engineering level calculus and physics are accepted. Also, Calculus III and Differential Equations are accepted as electives.
  • A minimum grade of C- is required in the following courses. CH101, CH221, CH222, CH223, CH224, CH331, TE303, PCC106, PCC301, PCC461.
  • Advised Electives Group 1: Select one from ARE201, EC201, EC205.
  • Advised Electives Group 2: Select one from PCC Electives AND MA242, MA341, MB351, MT366, MT381, MT432, CH441.
  • Advised Electives Group 3: Select one from ST311, ST361, ST370, ST380.
  • PCC Electives: Select one from PCC402, PCC407, PCC410, PCC420, PCC466, PCC471, PCC474, PCC490, PCC492C.
  • Due to its flexibility, this concentration is the most popular for those seeking double degrees in engineering and life sciences.
