Amount: $31,299.00
Funding Agencies: Cotton, Inc.

Denim, a symbol of personal style, comfort, and durability, touches our lives in many ways. Indigo Impact will engage students in project-based learning to demonstrate the value of denim products across multiple product lifecycle stages. Students will learn about conceptualization and development, marketing and promotions, and upcycling of denim products. This learning will take place both in the classroom and across the campus community. Students in three Wilson College classes will utilize the CottonWorks website to explore cotton sustainability and fundamentals. They will gain insight into the cotton product lifecycle, explore key concepts of reduce & reuse, and identify sustainable features for marketing and production. One course, developed specifically for this project, will enable fashion students to delve deeper into the fundamentals of denim product production, employing 3D apparel design software to reverse-engineer existing denim garments and design new upcycled denim products. Throughout the project, students will have the opportunity to hear from professionals working in denim product design and development. Participating students will have opportunities to collaborate across subject areas and to showcase their work. To further highlight denim's cultural impact, we will partner with the NCSU Womens Center and Arts NC STATE for student-focused programming around Denim Day 2026. This day, observed since 1999, allows individuals to express solidarity with victims of sexual violence by wearing denim. Wilson College students will have opportunities to extend their learning by participating in denim mending, upcycling, and embellishment workshops for the broader university community to further demonstrate the impact of denim.
